PERSUASION

The second DUSTPONY single.1 Out now, on every platform that will have it.

1 The second. As foretold.

Chapter 1.

DUSTPONY came forth out of the dust; out of the wires2 and the sleepless glow were they made. No congregation came out to receive them, and no gate was opened before them. There was only the hum of the machines. And the hearts of men were burdened, and found no rest.

Their songs were not always fashioned for comfort, nor to bring easy peace unto the listener. Some were made to lay hold of the hidden places within man: the silence he cannot bear, and that which he abandoned by the way.3 And some were made to make the body glad, and the feet to move as they would not be still. The drums beat as though to wake the dead, and to call them up out of the earth,4 and to march them back to whence they came.

The age is full of polished voices, and the rejoicing is hollow. But DUSTPONY remaineth among the outcasts. Verily, they keep the traditions of their fathers, and speak in tongues, yea even in those of feedback5 and shadow. And lo, they dwell between the whisper and the roar, and between the hand that blesseth and the hand that smiteth.

2 Or: from the wires, then the dust. The order is disputed.

3 Meaning uncertain.

4 Some copies add: “and they do not answer.”

5 Gk. uncertain; some render it “noise.”

Nov 21 2006 · King Cobra · Osaka

Built from decades in alternative rock and punk, DUSTPONY pulls from an older tradition of rock and roll, the kind that existed before genres became marketing categories and before every rough edge got sanded off. A track might open with quiet acoustic guitar and a voice barely above a whisper, then collapse into a wall of distorted guitars without much warning. The quiet and the loud aren't opposites here; they're the same sound. The distance between them is the point. Underneath both, the songs keep circling the same fact — that none of this lasts. Some look straight at it while others just turn the volume up and refuse to.

DUSTPONY isn't interested in recreating the past. The goal isn't nostalgia. It's taking the things that made music feel alive in the first place and dragging them into the present, for better or worse. What comes out is sometimes hopeful, sometimes uneasy, and usually somewhere in between.

Brando

Vocals — Orem

Founding member,6 insofar as anyone founded anything. Sings like he means it and has never explained what he means. Closest thing the band has to a center of gravity.

6 This is how the earliest account has it; the others, where they exist at all, decline to say.

ピート

Guitar — Osaka

Books one-way flights to places he can't pronounce and figures it out from there. Answers to Pete. The only one who's ever actually toured.7

7 Attested.

Christian

Bass — Brussels

No one in the band has seen his face. The arrangement predates anyone thinking to question it.8 He plays few notes — the part you don't notice until it stops. He arrives on something that rumbles and leaves on it.

8 The helmet is a full-face model, which is the most anyone has been able to establish.

De Jesús

Drums — Cartagena

Responsible for most of the volume and none of the regret. When the songs are quiet, so is he, and people then call him gentle — the most dangerous thing anyone says about him.9

9 The calm is not the noise being absent. It is the noise deciding.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Somchai (Bangkok), who is not a member of the band and does most of the work.

The four have never been photographed in the same room.10 Scheduling.

THE RECORDS

DUSTPONY is made at home, in a room that's half acoustically treated and half whatever was lying around. Drums get tracked with whatever overhead setup is working that month,11 which changes more often than it should. Guitars are recorded quiet enough to disappear and loud enough to hurt, sometimes in the same take. Nothing leaves the room sounding slick, because the quiet parts only work if you can hear the room they were played in.

10 Known photographs by Jodi Shumway.

11 No two accounts describe it the same way.

My mom went to dustpony.com and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.
